I suppose it could be made optional, or it phone you instead of Apple.

Besides, it's not like they can't already do that through iTunes.

Simple: It isn't. I never said it was.

"Either get one and take good care of it, or live in fear, stay home, buy nothing, keep the doors locked."

I thought I was taking good care of it - until it got stolen. It only takes a single mistake for a thief to take advantage of - and I admit, I am not perfect - but that does not mean I have to live in fear. Living in fear is not an option for me.

They probably don't want your music anyways - they want the iPod. Resetting the iPod to be used with another computer is easy.
