Usage deterrents as well

I'm not sure I want my iPod phoning home every time I connect it
to my computer. And I don't want any system that would disable
my usage of it (note that you're already not supposed to be able
to transfer music from the iPod to anywhere, although 3rd
parties have gotten around this).

There are lots and lots of $300 items out there that get stolen
every day. Why is the iPod the only one in need of tethers?
Either get one and take good care of it, or live in fear, stay
home, buy nothing, keep the doors locked.
