Free only if your time is worthless
Recording shows on a PVR is only free if you consider your time an effort to be worthless. To record a show yourself you must figure out when (and if) it will be showing and if it is the one you want, set your device to record it, wait for it to be recorded and then transfer it to your computer and/or your mobile device. All of that takes time and effort. There are a lot of professionals that make many dollors per hour that consider their time to be worth money. $1.99 is nothing to those people and there are millions of them. They will make this service profitable.
Sure there will be plently of people with more time than money that will get it for free but they wont matter much because they don't have that much money to get anyway. And someday those poor college kids will graduate and get jobs and be future customers.
