Yours must be badly configured.

I have my Pentium 4 Northwood running a touch over 500 Mhz faster than stock on stock cooling with no issues.

Anyone who would say that Intels run hot doesn't know anything about AMDs past history. AMDs thermal efficiency has gotten better but their thresholds are still higher than Intel. I have actually seen an AMD box catch on fire when the fan failed.

Just like anything else, AMD and Intel both have their good and bad points.

For raw FLOPS, I would recommend Intel. For things like gaming AMD is slightly better.
