Modification is modification
---The Honda stereo analogy doesn't hold water here.---

It's not out of scope. I am making a hardware modification to
the product I've purchased, whether I'm swapping in a new
stereo, or modifying the existing one. It's all within my legal
rights, just as it is to put cool stickers on the outside of the car,
or a new exhaust system. Honda can not prevent me from doing
what I want to do with what I own, just as Sony can not here.

---For the customers that wanted to do more with it...too
bad...deal with what ---

Okay, this is basically my point. Is it a good strategy to say to
your customers, "too bad...deal with it"? I don't think that's a
good way to market a product. I'd rather buy a product that is
unlimited in its application, rather than one that is crippled. It is
too bad, and I will deal with it by not buying one. Sony thus
loses my money and my business.

---I agree with your last statement...because you've clearly gave
an example of taking away features that came with the original
product that's a whole different issue than what started this PSP
thread.---

It's a fine line though, isn't it? Being hackable was apparently
something that came with the original product, albeit it was not
something that Sony intended.

Here's another example--let's say a digital camera company
buys small hard drives in bulk quantities. For me to buy the
hard drive alone, it costs $300, but to buy that camera (because
the camera company gets a bulk discount), that's only $250. Is
it wrong for me to buy the camera, remove the hard drive and
throw the rest of the thing away? That's not what the camera
company intended for me to do with the product. Would it be a
good business strategy for the camera company to make the
hard drive non-removable? Would that help them sell more
cameras?
