So much for ownership
---It's design to do what they intended it to do, so if they
choose to lock it down to it's original features that it shipped
with and not take anything away that came with then it's not
doing less.---

So Honda can prevent me from putting a new stereo in my car,
because it was intended to only have the stock stereo? Sorry,
no. I bought it, I own it, I can do whatever I want with it. End of
story. And yes, this new limitation does mean that I can do less
with the machine, whether what I was doing was what Sony
wanted me to do with it.

---Again, not true because they will line up to buy it for what's
its designed for and that's playing GAMES 1st and Movies and
Music come 2nd.---

And the customers who wanted to do more with it? What about
them? Why do you think the PalmPilot caught on and spread so
fast? It was because anyone could program for it, it wasn't
completely locked down. All of a sudden you got all of these
really cool useful new things you could do with your PalmPilot.
That will not be the case with the PSP, and it's a stupid move on
Sony's part, as they're throwing away potential new business.

---Not necessarily...again it's depending on what I discussed
earlier...if they are Hacking for fun to help solve bugs, utilize
new features, etc. or are they Crackers who are just messing
with the system to figure out a way to spread more viruses,
worms, etc. via IM for example. That's one way it can hurt Sony's
product reputation and the users that buy it.---

The hackers in question are trying to open up the product so
they can do more with it, run their own programs on it, play
other types of media. That makes it a more valuable product.
And these measures will not stop crackers, they will only limit
honest customers.

---What have they promised with the PSP that this update takes
away?...Nothing. The original terms was to play GAMES, MOVIES,
and MUSIC...so how is that unfair again?---

The promise was the functionality of the product when I
purchased it. A good comparison is TiVO. If you bought a box
2 years ago, you were purchasing something that could record
and store a program forever. Now TiVO has changed the terms
of service, and HBO can erase your hard drive whenever they
want to. In this case, if I bought a PSP when it first came out, it
had certain abilities that are now being taken away from me. It
doesn't matter if those abilities were Sony's selling points, or
something I discovered on my own. They were there when the
product was purchased, and now they're trying to take them
away, making it less valuable, yet offering no refund or
recompense for my loss.
