That may be their motivation
They cetainly deserve to make money off of the games. They devoted money to research and develop the system, and legions of programmers create the games. They will make their money off of it without fighting against the hacker and tweakers constantly.

My point was that hacking and tweaking leads to innovation and creativity. I don't think they should be suppressing that as hard as they are. Sony tried a few years ago to release a developers kit for the PS2, but few people purchased one because it was crippled in a wasted attempt to keep people from running pirated games. Guess what people still pirated PS2 games like crazy, but the home brewed applications were almost zero.

As for your question about what percentage of hackers are going to "run Linux on it compared to the percentage who are only going to copy games...?", I will simply point out that so far the PSP is an anomaly when it comes to game systems. My google research shows the vast majority of PSP hacks to be benign homebrew hacks, so in this case more than any other there are what I consider to be very legitimate hacks. Sony loses no money here until they start forcing firmware updates to play games. By doing this they will lose game sales since people with hacked systems will avoid losing their hacks.

I really think that they are just wasting time and money on a non-problem here. They released a great pocket computer with amazing potential and a beautiful screen then crippled it. Who wouldn't want to tinker with this awesome hardware to open its possibilities.
