Less than you think.
Most people who bother to "hack" something only do so as a learning experience. This is not a new idea--it's called scientific fair use. It's not really about piracy, although that can be a side effect.

You have to keep in mind that engineers are only human, and humans have to stay sharp or lose talent. Talents are like good teeth; if you don't take care of them, they go away.

At the same time, Sony has an obligation to their shareholders to ensure profitable investments, and it is well within their rights to ship units with hack-resistant firmware. It is also well within the consumer's rights to buy a different product that is more hacker friendly if available.

Freedom! You gotta love it!
