Listen to your own words...hint happy
"updating your product so it does less and less"

It's design to do what they intended it to do, so if they choose to lock it down to it's original features that it shipped with and not take anything away that came with then it's not doing less.

"I'm sure lots of people will be lining up to buy it purely for the reason of knowing that there's now less you can do with it."

Again, not true because they will line up to buy it for what's its designed for and that's playing GAMES 1st and Movies and Music come 2nd.

"Aren't the people doing the hacking those who are most interested in the platform, and thus those who are also going to be buying the most games, movies, etc.?"

Not necessarily...again it's depending on what I discussed earlier...if they are Hacking for fun to help solve bugs, utilize new features, etc. or are they Crackers who are just messing with the system to figure out a way to spread more viruses, worms, etc. via IM for example. That's one way it can hurt Sony's product reputation and the users that buy it.

"a way to be able to change the terms of service after promising one thing at first. It's unfair to the customer who bought the product under the original terms"

What have they promised with the PSP that this update takes away?...Nothing. The original terms was to play GAMES, MOVIES, and MUSIC...so how is that unfair again?

"It's also no longer Sony's property once they've sold it."

True, to a certain point...they still own the Intellectual Property behind the product that as I mentioned before in other examples could be altered in a way that hurts their goals for the product, so it's possible that it's not right or even legit to do that...but I'll leave that up to the experts to decide.
