What do they lose?
Seriously what does it harm them if I can write my own code to run on their hardware. Altering and modifying purchased manufactured goods has been around as long as there have been manufactured good. Think of muscle cars of the 70's. If every bolt was designed in those cars to require a special tool that only the manufacturer owned, would you be against people modding their cars? And before you tell me the analogy doesn't fit think about it. The PSP and a car are both machines. Sony locks out tinkerers with code and in my analogy the car manufacturer is locking out tinkerers with proprietary bolts.

People modifying devices and machines they have purchased has led to innovations which the original manufacturers have adopted in the past. It is beneficial to both parties and it is important to the U.S to keep encouraging the mod enthusiasts, because these people either become engineers or encourage others to do so.

Basically my point is that hacking and cracking is not inherently "bad", there are many beneficial aspects to it. Plus if I purchase something, it is mine to do with as I please. If I want to add a blower or a nitrous booster I reserve the right to do that. If I want to tweak my PSP to be able to wirelessly chat on AIM I reserve the right to do that. The problem comes when the manufacturers use those proprietary bolts to keep me from modding my machine and you tell me that it's wrong for me to make my own tools to remove them.
