As usual, faster-to-market wins over better design
Even though we _know_ that better design is better overall, better for users, better for company costs, better for long-term profitability. Only when all things are equal is first-to-market better, and all things aren't equal here. (I suspect, however, that this decision isn't driven so much by the PC market as by the game console market; Sony's PS/3 will have Blu-Ray and still leads XBox by far in market share. Microsoft desperately wants to cut into that share.)
