It's all about perceived value, folks...
Just like what Toyota has done with their Lexus brand. Create a perceived value through marketing for what is nothing more than a rebadged product with a few bells and whistles and eye candy thrown in. Look at the Toyota Camry and the Lexus ES as good examples of how this is done.

The smart folks realize this and buy the Camry. The less astute players go for the ES with it's $10,000 higher price tag.

Of course these are the same folks who would buy a Toyota Prius (essentially a hybrid version of the Corolla) for $8000 more than the comparable Corolla and just to save $2000 in gasoline.

Please realize that I'm generalizing here just to make my point.

It's all marketing and perceived value. It really has nothing to do with what's inside the box at all.

For Dell to pull it off succdessfully they won't be able to do it under the Dell name. They will have to spin off a high end brand name and use their marketing muscle to create a demand for it.
