I wonder ...?
"No doubt the internet has transformed research."

I doubt this. The reason is that the information research and
validation skills (I can cite a numberof textbooks that contain
gross inaccuracies in the sciences for example) are identical to a
typical library, the exception being the internet is largely
unclassified and has more spurious and distracting content but
is also often more media rich. The skills are essentially
unchanged.

I would go further to say that although Internet seraching skills
are valuable to learn, any teacher who takes a class to a lab to
search for a topic when they are not specifically teaching those
searching skills is creating a total waste of space and has got the
objectives of their lesson confused. If you are teaching about
volcanoes for example you need high quality links for the
students available (preferably on a web page so that typing
doesn't become the objective of the lesson) and the students
need learning objectives.

Perhaps your daughter is missing out on some extremely
valuable learning experiences with computers but perhaps there
is no one who is directing her properly to those experiences?
