Computers=Education?
I got a fine education without ever touching a computer. My daughter attends one of the finest private schools in the southwest. She still does most of her homework at the kitchen table. Aside from the internet and the occasional use of Excel, she could do everything without a computer (she types her reports on the computer, but that doesn't mean the computer is necessary). We still lack teachers who would fully integrate the computer into a curriculum (e.g., spend less time with pencil and paper doing math problems), but that situation would be an order of magnitude worse in the third world. No doubt the internet has transformed research. But English is still a key to this vast information resource. I can send a seventh-grader home with four textbooks that, if properly studied, would provide them with a quality education.
