I don't know if I would label this a snafu...
It looks to me like some real business savvy. First, separate the business into two - hardware and software. Wait around and see which one makes money. Then sell the one that doesn't, but maintain some semblance of a partnership in order not to undermine the salesprice of the unit you're selling. Then, when noone expects it, dump them and partner up with a former competitor that has a better product than yours.
