3Com's mismanagement
As a former Palm employee, I think the devastating hand of 3Com in all this needs to be told. When Donna Dubinsky and Jeff Hawkins left Palm in 1998, the company simply floundered for over two years. 3Com installed several stuffy corporate-types to run the company, but none of them captured the hearts of the employees like Donna and Jeff, and none of them had any creative vision for the future of the product line. You could literally feel the spirit of the company dying during that period; and it has never recovered.
