- I'd have to disagree

Modifying the game is something that the end user must do. Thus most of the points you made are moot. If I just modified the game, I can put it back to the default servers as I wish. The reason everyone wants off the Blizzard servers is that they are very slow, crash frequently and overrun with cheaters. The people who modified the game only want to run it on their own server. Blizzard doesn't want it, because they would lose control over the gamers (and possibly the revenue from charging them in the future). I'm not even sure this is reverse engineering. I can't tell if they made an add on (sounds okay to me), or actually modified the game itself (probably a no-no).
"1) They could change customer perception of Blizzard through popups/advertising on the server and intentionally using slow computers as servers"
The Blizzard servers are free, although not good. The programmers want to use fast servers.
"2) If they were truly malicious, they could have the server ask people to "re-register" their software and obtain personal information, possibly even a credit card"
How does that work? It's a free service, and you have to modify your own copy. Would someone would forget that and give the credit card number for a free service or something.
"3) In the same vein as (2), they could ask people to install an "update" that's really spyware"
The end user must modify their OWN COPY!!!!...
It's not a virus or worm.
People move away from Blizzards server BECAUSE they are slow, crash a lot, and have lots of cheaters. They want to move to private servers, where they don't have to put up with that.
I just realized something...
Soooo, instead of fixing the problem, Blizzard sued the people who were fixing the problem. Hmmmm - Posted by: el1jones Posted on: 09/02/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
