because it works now!
I bought my Mini after the announcement. The tone of your post implies that by doing so I am making a mistake. I don't think so - I am buying an appliance for use today. That there will be change in the future doesn't stop the machine doing what I want it for right now.

The announcement of Apple's is no different from the move from 68K to PPC or OS9 to OSX. Developers need time to switch so they have to be told!

Apple consumers for the most part don't really care as they are not buying the brand on the technical specs for the most part, but on the Apple brand, image and the application set.

Those that are technically savvy have Apple's previous track record on a processor move to go by. Its pretty damn good. It's certainly better than the 16 to 32 bit Windows transition while on the same processor family!

For example I had an app I wrote in '88 on a B&W 512KE that ran absoultely fine on a late 90s PPC (8500) which I found and ran for fun to watch it keel over... it didn't! I even completed the simple test suite against it just fine and because it used the Inside Mac API set it inherited some more advanced OS features introduced well after the App was compiled.

Yes fewer "fat" binaries will be available over time, however, the lifetime of the Mini -which is not cutting edge technology is likely to fade away before the software does.
