It has nothing to do with QUALITY...
If I create a product and get a patent, it allows me the freedom to develop a business without someone taking the idea and utilize more available resources to kill competition.

The patent process allows a small guy like you and I to compete against companies like Microsoft.

If there were no protections, companies would destroy competition before it could truly be called competition simply by throwing more money at deployment.
