Another possibility, if you're not in the US and thus (I guess) are not covered by this suit, is go and replace the battery yourself.

I did it this weekend on my 20-month old (and used daily for at least 5 hours) 3G iPod, and it indeed appears to have extended the playing time from 5-6 hours to way over 8 (I use 196kbs AAC files, thus the shorter battery duration).

Batteries are easy to find on Ebay and rather cheap to boot, and replacing the battery is not very hard (although the process may leave some marks on the side of your iPod if you don't have the right tools).
