Making assumptions

Your post makes the huge assumption that people actually want
to play music on their phones. I think that's a much bigger
question than the file format, or the store one downloads from.
Given that there's been a phone available for over a year that will
play WMA files, and that no one appears to be buying them from
any of the WMA online stores, I think the answer may be that no
one cares or wants to use this service.

By the way, my 2 year old Nokia phone plays mp3's just fine. I
put an edited Tom Waits riff on it as a ringtone, but other than
that, I see no reason to have songs on my phone.
