Apple has been great about post-warranty repair...
... for defective equipment, or perpetually problematic stuff, I
have found.

I had an iBook from the first run of units made when they
switched from the toilet seat design to the little square white
thing. This unit had to be sent back to have the video cable
going into the lid repaired like three times. The fourth time this
happened was about three months past the warranty period.
The AppleCare guy on the phone said, "You've been having a lot
of trouble with this one. Want a new one?" And sure enough,
two days later, I was given a replacement machine, brand new,
faster, with a larger HD than my original problematic device.
And this one has worked flawlessly for the past four years.

I got bit by the iMac G5 issue. There was a bad run of capacitors
provided to Apple which weren't quite up to spec. These were
used in the power supply, and on the midplane assembly. My
iMac just kinda made a popping noise and stopped working. I
could smell the cooked capacitors, and examination of the
mother board revealed bulging and leaking caps. The Apple
Store guy fixed it right away with a new motherboard and power
supply.

At least Apple stands by their products when stuff goes wrong,
and they are pretty fast about getting stuff repaired. They have
given me loaner equipment when I have had failures as well.
