Do you know how bad it had gotten?
The hacking and cheatcodes etc. had deteriorated the game so much that they lost over 30% of their user base (this was reported here as well). They have every right to protect their servers and the gaming experience of all their users. If they would rather play "hacker-wars", they can go start their own hosted games (i.e. the older games). There they can "hack the heck" out of each other.... as if somehow that makes the game better???!! I guess it really is about bragging rights rather than having some fun online and interacting with people.
