Be Fair to All of those companies
Placing Apple, Dell, HP,and Microsoft in a competitive group doesn't really work fairly for any one of them.

They each have their own unique approach to the computer industry as a whole. While Microsoft concentrates on sofware design, and little on hardware; Apple made their own hardware and wrote the OS to suit it originally. HP focuses on peripherals and components, and assembles computers from there for the most part, but not much software to speak of. Dell contracts what they put their name on and focuses on assembling what they sell from that supply.

Each has a plan that works for their business model, and comparison can only be disjointed and inaccurate between any of the four mentioned.
