"So you would you sell a child into slavery..."
In a New York Minute. In fact I just signed a lucrative deal with Pakistan for 12 year olds kids who speak english to provide Tech Support. What an assinine accusation.
Let me ask you something. Do you check who manufacturers or produces the goods you buy? Do you make sure that you don't buy say Brazillian oranges because it takes away from Florida producers or the fact that in Brazil the pickers including children only make a few dollars a day. How about the clothes you buy that have been produced by sweat shops right in the good old USA by Chinese seamstresses. What about those RC toys you bought for your kids last Christmas that are made in China where the government owns all businesses. I'd bet you don't care. I'd bet that you check the availability and price and buy, buy, buy.
Don't give me this morals of society crap. I can sit in the Galleria Mall in Houston and watch people from all walks and economic levels of life purchase goods and never give a care about where they come from. They buy what they want at the price they wish to pay. Neiman Marcus at the same mall has had several lawsuits against them for discriminatory hiring practices yet they are still going strong. Denny's which caters to other end of the economic spectrum, same type of lawsuits and yet they are still plugging along. Ask anyone that shops at the Salvation Army Store why they do and 90% of them will talk about price not the fact that the Salvation Army takes the profits to help the indigent and needy.
As for companies that abuse their workers and take advantage of them that is wrong no matter what country they are in. As long as there are consumers for the goods the abuses are going to continue. Lest you want to blame America for these ills I would remind you that China is quickly catching up as a consumer nation to the United States. As does Europe btw. Where are the high Societal Morals to stop the abusers. In the dump. Till the consuming stops the abuses will continue.
"Profit and morals are not mutually exclusive"
I never said they weren't.
There is a small, very small sector of people that make "social issues" part of their buying decisions. I would direct back to Polisners statement:
Said Polisner, who worked at Oracle for 12 years. "We believe that if we provide a compelling and easy experience and the pricing is reasonably competitive that (the site) will do well."
My point remains this, obeying the laws of a country, state or town is not some matter of "higher moral social values" it is obeying the damn laws. Any company that goes into business without a strong profit motive is doomed from the outset. If the company goes into to business to donate all the money they collect that is fine. They donate their "PROFIT" after expenses. MOST people buy where the price is right and they feel they are provided good cusotmer service. Nothin more nothing less. - Posted by: Squawkbox Posted on: 08/06/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
