Sounded good at first, but now sounds bad
I liked the idea of clicker for students that was a standard among the school, and provided by the school. That sounded good, a teaching tool, and an tool for the teachers to get better information.
HOWEVER, if the students have to get it, then forget it. It would be just like text books. Schools would see it as revenue stream. Teachers would be lured by rewards from clicker companies. Then (like workbooks, and supplements) they would become another useless cost for students. What are the students going to do? buy one for every different class, that they may only use once. College students almost always have to get a laptop now, but this should be expensed to the schools.
