MS/HP gearing up for the next war ...
Microsoft lost the iPod war, and now they are forcing HP into a strategic withdrawal in order to prepare for the next one. Which is ...

The convergence pda/multi-media/game pocket player. Sort of like mashing an iPaq/iPod/PSP all into one unit. All of the technology is there, what is missing is the licensing and volume to make it price-competitive.

I've seen software from multiple sources that make a pda look just like an iPod, even down to the scroll wheel on the touch screen. They already have color screens, display pictures, and do movies (not great, but passable). There are prototypes with next-generation microdrives, and there's even proposals for a UMD-like disk reader with Blu-Ray that hold gigabytes for DVD movies and 3D video games.

The tech giants are pursuing this gizmo from different angles and technologies. Because of the competing alliances (Sony/IBM, MS/Intel/HP, Apple) nobody has the perfect solution, yet ...
