Deliberate bad writing
I believe the point of this contest was to deliberately come up with bad turns of phrase. This wasn't just someone looking through regular writing efforts to find horrible examples.

It's a lot like the obfuscated C code contest. These people don't normally (at least I hope they don't) code that way.
