There are *lots* of alternatives
Better not get too firm, as plenty of alternatives exist. Not to mention that people stupidly flocked to the RAR format, so many people went over to WinRAR anyways . . .

Trust me, people will switch to other stuff quickly - "FREE" was the big selling point of WinZip in the first place. If it goes away, so do most WinZip users.

Not to mention that with modern OSes natively supporting zip (latest versions of Windows, MacOS and Linux all do), the demand for third party programs that open .zip files is already declining.

Lastly, open source projects for decompressing files are becoming more common. A new but promising format is .7z, which is a completely open file format and compresses as well (if not better than) as RAR and ACE. Look forward to seeing more of it in the future.
