It seems odd that you could patent this
It's just something that a computer can do. If they'd figured a way to do this with VCR then sure but saving a file to hard disk and watching it as it save has been done for some time. Only differnce here is these companies have taken something that is simple to do and packaged/marketed it with a nice user interface.

I have serious doubt that they could even have achieved this back in 1991. I had 10 MB hard drive back then and my PC was so slow as well the graphics weren't good enough to watch video on. Add to that the dial up to a BBS was about all you could do as Internet access was limited to universities.
