Nothing is wrong
Most (if not all) universities have a flavor of web email, and as long as the student doesn't depend on campus support to configure or support their systems, they can pretty much use whatever they want. They may be required to use a certain VPN client to use campus wireless, for instance, and that may only be supported for Windows, but every university I've been associated with (and I've worked for several) has been willing to help students develop solutions for their particular configuration.
