Not so much discrimination...
... but accommodating the university system. What do they use for a mail server? If Exchange, that limits connecting to Apple and Microsoft, unless someone has an open source (Novell Evolution maybe) solution for connecting to Exchange. Universities have the right to tell a student that "if you want to connect to our network and receive university services, these are the Operating Systems that are supported. If you want to use an alternative, you may not be able to take advantage of the full range of services that this university offers."

What is wrong with that?
