I'm happy to give inventors protection but

When it comes to software they don't need to release their secrets to release the product, so who needs the patent? Its cheaper to use trade secrets, doesn't tie up the court and is available to everyone writing software. Because of its nature they can either choose to keep the inner algo secret or disclose it, up to them.

Of course thats also why we have the prior art problems for the same reason.

For these 'interface' looky-feely things, I thought we done with these long ago in Apple vs Microsoft lawsuits?
For some bizarre reason it looks like the US patent office has been issuing look and feel style patents to give them a new basis. Why?
