Actually, patents suck...

They provide intellectual property owners with little more than the right to sue someone who steals their ideas. The burden of proof is still on the IP owner, and in the meantime, the thief makes off with the plunder. It has happened so many times throughout history that one wonders how the sham of patent "protection" remains so persistent. Trade secret laws are somewhat more effective at protecting IP rights, but there will never be any effective IP protection until the state gets out of the act. You can't protect private property rights with public coercion.
