But...
Your are still replacing the drum on the HP, you just are forced to replace it every time. Since the drum can last 3 times longer than the toner, why should you have the expense of replacing it every time the toner runs out? If you figure in the cost of replacing the Brother drum unit every third toner, you will find that the cost per page is still about half of the HPs similar model. Add that to the fact that the Brother is much lower cost up front, and you have a real bargain.

...That's only true if you're buying a genuine HP replacement cartridge. I've found the generic office supply store brand to be about 1/2 the price (or less) and can do the job just as nicely. Of course, their cartridges are most likely HP genuines that have been refilled and refurbed, but as you pointed out - the drum can outlast the contents of the cartridge by at least a factor of 3.

I got my rather "ancient" HP Laserjet 5L from a computer junk dealer - they buy office loads of computer gear and recycle the useful bits for $60 bucks a few years back. The only issue I've ever had was streaky printing - and that was due to the toner running out. A quick trip to the local office store with the old cartridge in tow and the quality was restored to it's usual 600 dpi glory. Now THAT is a real bargain.
