ME definately the worst. That's a good point on Itaniums but just because they MAY use the x86 arch doesn't automatically mean OSX(especially all of Apple's goodies) will automatically run on just any box. For one, since Apple has had the luxury of selling their OSX only on their boxes, I am sure their driver and HW compat list isn't very large. Plus, you're right, Apple would have to be very stupid to cripple their HW sales.

Responding to the "forced to upgrade" post:
This is nothing like an MS NT end of life. That affects Enterprises and costs serious coin. Apple stopping support for OS 9 is more like a non-event and shouldn't force anyone to upgrade.
