This may be misleading!
I would bet that this is because a growing number of these purchases are for SECOND computers, not as ONLY computers.

Microsoft has not released a new OS for awhile now. Windows XP was written for a 300MHz Pentium III processor with 128MB of RAM -- and it will be another year before 'Longhorn' hits the streets.

If I have a choice between replacing my desktop -- a five-year-old 866Mhz Pentium III which runs Windows XP just fine -- or buying a brand new laptop/notebook and suddenly having two very capable computers -- I would buy the sub-$1000 laptop in a flash.

However, if I needed to replace my aging desktop to run the current OS offering, I would be a lot less likely to pay a premium price for a notebook as my ONLY computer.

When Longhorn hits the streets and everyone suddenly needs a 3GHz processor and 1GB of RAM to get reasonable performance, expect to see people once again buying desktop systems first (because of their lower price point) and laptop systems only after that have suitable desktops and a few extra dollars to spend.

The article does not distinguish between the enterprise and the individual but, except for mobile professionals, where the the ONLY computer may be a laptop computer, I would expect the trend to be the same.
