OEM's STILL don't get it
Their marketing model is price, specs, price and price. It's no wonder they're all losing money on PC's.

Slapping a bunch of marginal deal-du-jour no-brand parts into a heavily branded model-specific box is a spent biz model that cultivates mutual contempt between OEM and users.

It doesn't get any better when folx are shopping, now maybe, their 4th 'puter or so. PCI-X, SP2, HThreading, Prescotts and even 64-bit are giant yawns.

A new "state-of-the-art" computer "deal" is now about as exciting as a new water heater...only not as painless.

Xfering data, prefs, settings, cookies, email and apps from old to new PC is ever-darker drudgery which now must also traverse the greedy minefield of "product acivation" and other contrived obsolescence.

A no-brand "open box", consisting of quality branded parts elevates users to the last PC they'll have to buy. A second physical hard drive, OS choice, smart partitioning/image backups, common-sense tweaks and maybe a dual-boot setup all leave Dell, etc. totally in the dust.

Down the road, our smart customer is never more than one day or $100 from fixing just about anything. Anyway, it sure beats "warranty fulfillment" from Malaysia...or worse, Texas.
