One part I don't quite get
"The move would allow companies to significantly increase DVD capacity without having to transition to next-generation formats."

Isn't this a next-generation format? I doubt existing DVD players could read it. I think benefit over blu-ray would simply be the fact that it would hold 16 times the data. Of course if it does catch on, the next step would be blue laser versions of this format for about 5 TB discs.
