As an educator for 11 years, I don't see an advantage to the program implemented by you local schools. Tehnology should enhance learning and not be the focus of learning. If you think changing an OS is the solution then that is a disservice. An additional responsibility of mine is to be the technology contact at my school. I help maintain over 125 windows computers and am called several times daily by the our small school of 21 classrooms. As far as the XP arguements, only about 1/3 of our school is XP because of funding. We have only 3 network administartors in the county and a technician comes to the schools once every 2 weeks to perform hardware repairs. I have used Macs and Win OS and both work just fine as a tool. But I get tired of spending so much time on computer maintenace on the Win systems.
