Here is an example of what happens when you install XP on different
hardware,i am a Musician who (for some of my time)sets up/
fixes Macs&Windows Machines usually running XP or 98.

These machines are sometimes bogged down with spyware/viri
& adware & also those little crappy apps that load automatically
in the bottom right tray& as a result take up memory &
slowdown the PC.

Now you can't tell me that a Windows box does'nt take longer to
set up & maintain, IT(support)Does.

You have to factor in all the time for the new drivers if your
upgrading say from 98/me to XP, there are always problems as i
recently discovered.

Upgrading the eOne by Emachines,
the modem would not budge & do not TELL ME that i was doing
something wrong as Emachines saw fit to do some weird driver
stuff & made it impossible to use it with any other OS other than
there own version of 98.

This sort of problem is widespread in the Wintel world especially
in things like BIOS & modem firmware which is an absolute pain
& a cross your fingers chore & you have to boot in to DOS mode
to do it, have a win98 boot floppy & strip it of any extras so you
can get the said firmware app on there.

There are many other areas of Windows including dumb things
like setting up the BIOS to auto power off properly when you
shutdown, these are the typical probs you face when you have
an old celeron 466 someone has given you that used to run
older Windows versions & the owner now wants updated.

All these ******** issues are not PART OF THE MAC EXPERIENCE,
apart from modem & machine firmware which is relatively easy.

And installing & backup are much easier to do on a MAC
because you can boot from cd & see all your files & if you do not
have many files you can simply drag those files to either an
external hd or floppy or you could simply install the new os over
the old & you'll see the old os relabelled, the last can be done
with Windows also but it is advised against when you are
installing Windows XP as a result it is not a friendly setup.
process.

So here is the typical scenario for Windows when one needs to
fix it
1. try to backup data by putting the drive in another machine.
then drag all files (if you can find them) the best way with Win is
to copy everything ,assuming you have the space on this other
machine.

2. Format the old machine & setup Win XP along with all new
video, sound, modem, ethernet etc, sometimes the os will install
some of these automatically.

3. Reinstall all the old Programs & Copy all the old data back
into this machine (usually from a burnt cd or by external hd.

So Mr itpro it aint so.
