Serious?
XP has shown to be much more virus resistant than previous versions of Windows, as has been shown by a variety of recent tests. Is it immune? No, no OS that I know of is, including Linux and Mac. Would I have fewer issues with virus/spyware if I were running a Mac or Linux? Yes, probably, but any responsible IT pro will keep his system up to date regardless of what he is running. My point is still valid. A properly updated XP system with decent antivirus software has very few problems with malware, regardless of what you see posted here by the MS haters. My antivirus software (I use McAfee Enterprise) catches most of the spyware crap, but I also use MS Antispyware and Adaware. The MS product has been steadily improving since its release, and now actually catches things that Adaware misses. It also updates and scans automatically. What I don't understand is the attitude that keeping my system clean and updated is some difficult or highly technical task. You certainly don't have to reformat a hard drive to remove spyware.

If you can't handle keeping a Windows system up to date and clean, how will you handle a Linux system? I have installed Linux servers and admire what it is capable of, but it does generally require a more technical user than a Windows box, and is not yet ready for the destop for the masses. Macs are fairly forgiving for the nontechie, but even they need to be kept up to date and require virus protection. As far as Macs being vastly easier to use or manage, I have used, sold, and supported Macs, and I just don't buy it. Most people can pick up either system easily, and are better off choosing the system that has the software to meet their needs (I know, some of you will consider that heresy). The market has shown that Windows systems are a better choice for most of us, and schools should be no different.
