Yes, untrue...
You're still trying to push the "Windows is cheaper" perpetual myth.

>>> replacement parts for Macs alone are more expensive and kids should be using the standard not the niche. >>>

"Too expensive" and "just niche machines" are both bogus.

Many parts are the same today so cost = same (except the motherboard... and let's not talk of Dell notebook motherboard quality, or general lack of).

You get what you pay for and cheap Wintel is usually not the equivalent of a Mac. This argument also always conveniently ignores... time spent (for DIY boxes); included software (eg, the iLife and other iApps on a Mac); and subsequent support and maintenance costs inherently greater on a Wintel box. I challenge you to produce an independent TCO/ROI study that proves otherwise (ie, Windows beats Mac TCO-wise and not produced or sponsored by Microsoft).

Windows... cheap thru the door... expensive forever more.

Henrico will find out after a years time or so that Dell's offer wasn't so cheap and such a bargain after all (unless the school board can bury the true costs or explain them away as "transition costs" or some such drivel... the "PYA" syndrome).

Even some of the comments of the so-called Henrico IT Manager casts doubt on his knowledge and smarts in his Dell/iBook comparison...

"Lloyd Brown, director of technology for Henrico schools, explained the features of the new Dell Inspiron 600M laptop. The screen is 14 inches compared to the iBook?s 12-inch screen. It has two USB ports and a track pad for moving the mouse. The Dells will utilize a Windows XP operating system."

I guess the iBook uses stretched string and the command line for control (NEWS... it actually has 2 USB 2.0 ports AND a Firewire port PLUS, GASP... a Trackpad)

(no mention of all the other Dell "options"... installed memory (std 256)? CD, DVD, CD-RW, CD-RW/DVD Combo? hard drive size?, etc)

And the use of XP should be considered a negative, not a selling point happy

He hardly seems the epitome of informed and accurate information or he's really stretching it to try and support his boards position.

"The logo will change, but the tool is the same". That was the message from Henrico County school officials"

Kind of shoots down your niche comment. Henrico says they're just tools and supposedly the same, so it must goe both ways (you can use Mac instead of Windows).

Strangely and ironically, while Tiger is receiving almost unanimous praise from the main-line press (tech and consumer) and most saying it's what Longhorn longs to be (whenever it comes out), Henrico appears to be taking a step backwards.

Something smells in Henrico County... maybe the smell of all that extra money being burned or flushed down the toilet.
