Windows is NOT important when learning to use a computer!
After all the VAST majority of people will be using a computer
only to do a set few tasks and the OS they use will not be an
issue. Rather the "task" at hand will. In most cases it will be
repetative and well boring, and relatively easy to use and master.
This whole "They must use MS to be ready for the real world" is
hog wash!!!

More than likely they will need to know the basics about using
things like word processors and spread sheets and perhaps
using a browser and email effectively. That and the keyboard/
mouse combo. You can learn all these things on either of the
three major system choices today. Mac, Linux and or MS.
