Because in many areas it is. I have 3000/512 DSL for $40.00 a month. Before they were bought out my local Cable provider offered 384/128 for the same price. Comcast recently bought out my Cable Co, so I'm sure they will up speeds to compete, but even when the cable service was 384/128 (I used it before DSL arrived), at around 7PM it was like using a 56k modem. Given my town's horrid cable infrastructure, I don't see how Comcast is going to sqeeze 6Mbit connections out to everyone.

Cable companies also cap their users in most areas, while DSL subscribers are rarely capped. This is due to the shared nature of cable. I'll take my 3000/512 DSL connection, over a 6000/384 Comcast Cable connection any day. If you live in an area with a good cable infrastructure and you don't experience the "7 O'clock slowdowns", then lucky you.

Because the phone companies own the vast majority of the internet backbone. Where do you think your cable company gets it's bandwidth?

"WiMAX will pwn both cable and telephone companies in the future.. wireless is where it will be and unfortunately for these companies.. if they dont get with the times, they are gonna be out of it."

Suuuure. let me know when Wireless connections have the same latency and reliability as land lines - then we'll talk.
