I don't want a compromise...

I want my DSL without their ancient landline technology. I have my cell phone, and do not want or need a second line.

Verizon does not wish to sell me such, and would rather force me to get what I do not want or need from them to get DSL. So, I use cable, which, though more expensive, is fine with me, so Verizon will not have me as a customer at all. They made their choice, I have made mine.

One thing they should consider though, they should consider 'customer antipathy'. If Verizon makes a customer angry, or make one dislike them with such manuevers, it may take some doing to get these customers to consider using their services again in the future. As landline phones become obsolete, they may find themselves with little other option than to unbundle their services, only to find the customers they've irked in the past deciding to use someone elses services. (Yes, like I already have).

Don't irk your customers when you are facing a big change in technologies, or you may find that they won't be willing to purchase from you again.
