911 Problems are designed in ...
because, as anyone with half a brain can tell you, it is money that makes the world go 'round. If one was interested in an actual solution, it is simple as programming each cell tower to route any 911 call, along with it's GPS address (since this is now a required feature of all cell phones), to the GEOGRAPHICALLY NEAREST 911 call center! This isn't rocket science. It's just the cell tower's local number! Doh!

The reason it isn't being done has nothing to do with technical merits ... it is MONEY. In fact, several "enhanced 911 service" providers are mentioned in the article. I imagine it went like this: "Frank, we should route 911 calls to the local center. This line of code ought to do it. Bill? Are you out of your mind? This is a gold mine. 911 is an emergency. An urgent call. And worth big bucks! I mean, what would you pay to have the cops arrive promptly when your neighbor gets drunk and starts shooting up the 'hood?!?! Plenty I tell ya. Ditch that line of code and route the calls to some place in India for a while. When the complaints start rolling in, we'll form a new company to provide this most valuable "proper 911 routing" service. It's worth millions I tell ya. Save that line of code in a NotePad file somewhere and delete out of the tower server code ASAP."

Am I a cynic? Yeah. Am I stupid? No. Breaking up the Bells was supposed to save money. My phone bills doubled. Using the "free air" to call around was supposed to save money. My cell phone bill easily exceeds my land line bill any month. Deregulating any public utility (phone service, energy, you name it) was supposed to save money. Yeah. Right. Like medicine-for-profit would lower those costs! And separating everything that happens to you in the hospital into all the little pieces so you can be charged separately for each little piece. And the jokes roll on ... except they're jokes on the general public by a whole new generation of CEO millionaires in a contest to see who can screw the public most spectacularly. Too bad the party ends when these clowns finally manage to backrupt all major American companies into the hands of foreign ownership ... because then no one here will be happy!
