Okay, being in charge is probably part of it. But the reason has to include: he likes software.

closest comparison to Bill Gates is John D. Rockefeller. Rockefeller retired early, around 1900. He kept trying to resign from his job title and never did any work. He became tired of the oil business and what doing business required.

John D. Rockefeller didn't like oil enough. Bill Gates does like software enough.
