MJB--it's a complex issue
It is indeed a complex issue. We don't have a government ID that we're required by law to possess, yet you can be arrested for not presenting a government ID to an authority figure. In that case, I think the issue is really one of "reasonable suspicion", that the police have to have that in order to search your car or ask for your ID. It's a hard line to draw as far as what constitutes "reasonable suspicion".

The other case on that website is equally, if not moreso, fascinating. Do you have to have a driver's license to fly? Is this a law? Is it a secret law that the government refuses to acknowledge?

I don't have huge issues with showing my ID in situations like that. But I am highly concerned that I could be breaking the law because the law is secret and I'm not allowed to know it exists. I also have some issues that the whole concept goes against the freedoms the USA usually stands for. It seem like some sort of fascist police state where you have to present your papers if you wish to travel within your own country. In the land of the V-8 and the superhighway, that just doesn't seem right.
