- WiMAX is just wireless telephony.
-
Basically, what happens is that WiMAX is the carrier wave for other services. An example is 4G wireless being developed in Asia. Because of the range (roughly 2mi to 30km) you can have a wireless signal over a wider area using less towers. A cellphone is now basically a mobile device (the older Americans will complain more, no doubt..) providing many services. An example, you can get a Nokia 9x00 series phone that has a (sorta) full keyboard and can in some cases replace the need for a desktop (or laptop) and fit into your pocket. It can currently use WiFi and GSM/GPRS.
WiFi is a short range (as in home or small business LAN) wireless technology. It an also be used in a mesh network, as they do in Eastern Europe already. Both WiFi and WiMAX have their places, and it will be a few years (2006 or 2007) before WiMAX works with laptops and cellphones. Following that, you will still have to deal with authentication issues (no free service if you don't pay the party that owns the towers).
You could have a larger mesh network using WiMAX, perhaps by 2007, thus improving wireless phone/device access. You do have a phone that can access the internet and surf the web, check email, and run simple office applications, right? - Posted by: B.O.F.H.
